Can teachers monitor students on personal devices?

Yes — with limitations. Securly Classroom can only monitor a student when:

  • The student is using Google Chrome
  • They are signed into Chrome with their district Google account
  • A live Securly Classroom session is running

What can be monitored?

  • Google Chrome tabs and websites
  • Screen activity inside the Google Chrome browser only

What cannot be monitored?

  • Other browsers (Edge, Firefox, Safari)
  • Personal Google accounts
  • Guest mode
  • Desktop apps or games
  • The entire device screen

Important to know:

  • Personal (BYOD) devices are not district-managed
  • Monitoring is browser-only
  • Students can avoid monitoring by switching browsers or profiles

Best practice for teachers:

Ask students to:

  1. Open Google Chrome
  2. Sign in with their school Google account
  3. Join the Securly Classroom session

If the student does not appear, have them fully sign out of Chrome and sign back in.
