Running Windows Updates

Summary

Instructions for updating Windows, keeping your device secure and preventing slowness.

Step-by-Step

  1. For both Windows 10 and 11, start by typing "updates" in the search bar at the bottom of your screen.
    1. If you don't have the search bar, right-click on the Windows logo in the bottom-left corner and choose "Settings".
    2. In the new Window that pops up, click "Update & Security".
  2. Select the option "Check for updates System Settings" that pops up.
  3. A new window will appear that looks similar to this:

  4. Click "Check for updates".
  5. If your computer needs updates, a list will populate. There could be one, or dozens of updates.
  6. Scroll down until you see a button that says "Install" and click it. Sometimes the computer will start installing automatically and you won't need to click on it.
  7. Let the computer download and install the updates.
    1. Some updates can't install until others install first. This is normal.
    2. The computer may ask to restart, when this happens, save anything you are working on, and restart the computer by clicking on the "Restart Now" button in the Updates window.
  8. If there are many updates available, you will need to repeat this process until all updates are completed.

Please note: You may see red text that says something like "Some settings are managed by your system administrator".  This is normal and should not affect your ability to update your computer.

Additional Information

It's possible that when you check for updates, it will show a status of "You're up to date". There will be a blue line of text just below that, stating "Check online for updates from Microsoft Update". If you see that, click on it to check for updates.
